After talking to various people on the website and searching through hundreds of profiles I went on a couple of dates but nothing came of it – there was no spark.

I was about to embark on my third meeting with T after a turbulent first and second date with him, and I must say, the date went swimmingly! We were both relaxed, confident and seemed willing to see where the date took us without playing games with each other.

Early on in the date, we just sipped coffee and shared a piece of cake, but the afternoon flew by and we decided to go to a nice pub down the road for a bit of food and a G&T (well, I had a G&T, he had another coffee as he was driving).

We surveyed over 250 women recently and it seems women’s main preferences in a partner really haven’t changed over the last few years. According to our online dating survey, a mans most attractive personality trait is honesty. No lying, no playing games, just good old up-front honesty is appreciated by our lovely ladies.

Our female members also told us that they liked to go out on daytime dates, something casual like going for a coffee or a drink in a local pub or a nice lunch in a local restaurant. ‘Local’ being the key here, as women like to feel safe when they are meeting people for the first time. A date offered closest to home or to where they work is considered a plus in the decision making process.

When you’re actually out on a date, manners and old-fashioned chivalry go a long, long way. Subtle things like standing up when your date arrives and helping a lady with her coat are very small gestures that make a lady feel special and that you are taking an interest in her. Not all women want to be treated like a princess at all times, but at the very least, deserve manners and respect.

Our members tell us that they like to read about a man’s interests and what he likes doing with his spare time. Women like to hear about what makes a man tick, but are turned off by smutty talk and over-confidence. The same goes for under-confidence and putting yourself down in your profile text. You need to show that you are happy and upbeat about your life as that attracts people much more than saying negative things. Women generally don’t like to hear about other women and how they may have wronged or hurt you in the past, so keep the ex talk to a few dates down the line – if she brings it up!

The top answer given by men was that they didn’t have anything to lose, and women felt they could be more selective with who they spent their time on. A positive outcome here, showing the changing tide of opinion around online dating! Men and women alike feel more relaxed about joining online dating sites and feel that they are a good way of getting to know someone really special.

Overall, both men and women are most turned off by profiles with no picture, with 17% and 14%, (respectively) choosing this as one of their online dating pet hates. Both also chose to relate to the other person’s interests after scanning their profile when messaging someone for the first time. Unsurprisingly, men are also much more prolific messagers than women, with 28% saying they had sent more than 15 messages in the last 6 months compared to 23% of women saying they’d sent 4-8.

And when it comes to what men and women value most in the personality of a potential partner, it’s perhaps no surprise that women look primarily for honesty, while men seek out a good sense of humour. Again, perhaps no surprises here when we tell you that the majority of men (29%) look for women 2-4 years their junior, while women are on the lookout for a partner who matches their own age as closely as possible.

When it comes to going on dates, it might be useful for you to know for when you arrange yours! Both men and women (65% and 70%, respectively) said they preferred daytime dates when meeting for the first time, and 18% of men prefer to go for a drink on a first date, and women prefer to be wined and dined.

And interestingly, 13% of men and 8% of women admitted to lying on their profile – both about age! Just 19% of men said they considered salary when looking for a potential partner, with 49% saying that their potential partner’s ideal salary would be between 21 and 30k. A whopping 43%of women said they would consider salary when looking for a partner, although 55% said that their partner’s ideal salary would be between 15-20k.
