Life on the shelfAre you sitting comfortably?
 | Let's face it, a lot us of spend a lot of time on here, so much so that it's noticeable when one of us is missing, or we feel that our absence has to be explained.
We are on the dreaded Shelf!
So, what's your shelf like and how have you made it more comfortable?
In this context my shelf is my chair and desk. The desk is unremarkable, but the chair is an old fashioned little thing which my dad got from somewhere and re-upholstered. It's very comfortable and theoretically capable of keeping me comfortable all night. (I don't admit to being on here that long)
I've music on my PC to keep me company...or should that be "to accompany me" my faithful ashtray by my side, and a bit of a trek to the fridge....
If the thought of me typing one fingered with an enigmatic cheesy grin doesn't put you off, maybe you could give a pen portrait of your shelf....

 | Well depends on how you depict shelf Keith....I hadnt realised I was in the supermarket....but I suppose when we are on sites like this you are on a shelf...now I just hope I havent passed my sell by date!!! LOL!!!! |
 | Keith trust you to could come up with a thread like this ;-).
I'm still trying to find my position on a shelf as far as marketing shelves are concerned. So fairly new and not as settled as you it seems LOL.

 | Hmm, my shelf has books, my pc, several friends, my snake, my degu and my parakeet. Also (sometimes) a bottle of red, (sometimes) Diet Coke when I'm on the wagon, some good films and a few favourite clips from Youtube (Monty Python's "The Funniest Joke in the World" being No 1). All in all I'm very happy with my shelf and am not thinking of visiting Ikea to expand it any time soon! (Could do with a couple of new brackets but I'll brave Homebase ...!) |
 | LOL Keith, well I suppose your right we are on the shelf (lets hope its a temporary situation.......
My shelf is my Pc and a computer chair, quite a new chair and so quite comfy , like yours Keith.
Also in the room I have a small tv, and a sofa, (its not the main living room) I also have a cd player and my cat often sits by me on the sofa when I'm in here!
Its a nice room, or should I say shelf, but I hope i'm not stuck here to long!!!! ;-) xx

 | my shelf has a screw loose...not sure what that says really :/

 | My shelf needs reinforced wall brackets :op |
 | Gosh, I never really thought about being on the shelf, but now you come to mention it, I guess the realisation gave me some food for thought. Hmmm, it now feels decidely uncomfortable, not physically, but mentally. Telly to the left, music to the right, fish tank ahead left, view of the garden ahead right, fridge extreme right, wine rack extreme right above, and yet.....
I'm just going to pop another cork. Exits stage right |
 | well my temporary shelf is my desk, chair and computer. Alongside that I have some wine and nibbles on a friday night..hopefully one day I will be able to leave my shelf for good..

 | My shelf's mobile. With a rechargeable power pack & wireless connection, it goes everywhere with me. |
 | I have to wait my turn to get on the shelf, push my son of it at about 9.30 and then climb onboard. Top shelf full of recipe books, next shelf full of sons pc games, next shelf dictionaries and thesaurus, letters and bills to be answered or filed away, bottom shelf is where I sit in the comfy chair, glass of water to the right hand side! Well, I have to have at least one night a week alcohol free :) lol |
 | hi shazzi
well my shelf only my my computer on
could find room for you shazzi |
 | Interesting you should bring this up Keith. Did you see a programme on BBC2 last night about addiction? It started off discussing conventional forms of addiction, alcohol, drugs etc., then widened the scope to forms of addiction like gambling and interactive gaming. These newer forms of on-line addiction are all similar in that the payoff is a dopamine hit -doesn't it feel pleasurable when someone takes an interest?
That's why I'd always judge it's efficacy according to results.
Normally I'd say that three months would be quite long enough to establish a date with someone, but it seems not this way. That's why I said for me it's a displacement activity, because I am temporarily trapped at home for long periods; this is probably also the case with many mothers, and other people who for various reasons can't get out much, so chatting is fine, but it's no substitute for the real thing. |
 | WS hear hear :o) |
 | Have to agree with you WS, it is pleasurable when someone takes an interest, but it's also pleasurable to just chat with other now familiar people on a fairly regular basis
My three month membership (which I also thought would be long enough to establish a date/relationship with someone) is nearly at an end, I have been on a couple of dates with gents who are members of D/A but have now established a relationship from outside of D/A. I don't think I will renew my membership as I feel I have got to know the people I would like to keep in contact with.
I will be staying on D/A but probably not getting online as often. For me D/A has been/is still excellent to be able to log onto in the evenings and chat online to some now good friends but as you say it is no substitute for the real thing.

 | Congratulations, peppercorn, hope that you find happiness in 'Fleshyland' (to coin Shar's delightful description!)
It is good to be able to communicate with people that you may not be emotionally involved with from time to time - we're all real people (I think!) with real lives, asprations and feelings lol nearly said asparagus!
Good luck :) |
 | Well said WS...... |
 | and thank you triger lol |
