Getting a housemate

It's finally happened - I need to get a housemate so that I can cover the bills, and hopefully eat during winter.

Has anyone had or been a lodger before? What problems do I need to be aware of?

Practical advice greatly appreciated :o)

can't give any sensible advice i'm afraid :/ but just remember, my last lodger i could never damn well get rid of and now i'm his slave in mind, body and soul. let that be a cautionary tale to you.

hey, i've got a great idea. we probably won't be able to eat this winter (unless the chickens continue to lay) and we have a spare bedroom and! and! you'd only be 45 mins from essex. result :) £50 a week and some gardening?

hope someone comes up with something sensible :/

Make sure you have a proper tenancy agreement and decide whether they have the run of your house or not, then plan from there.

i have no idea what you two are talking about but i have a feeling i'm not meant to :) so i'm off to join la la in la la land. oh incidentally, i still have the tenancy agreement from the flat, could let you have that (for a small fee). it'd be way more than you needed but you could pick out the most relevant/necessary bits.

The only lodger I've ever had was a 6'5" New Zealander who smelled strongly of garlic all the time. I'm sure there's a message in there somewhere :o\

Contracts are the way forward, everyone knows the rules then (if you decide you need one let me know, I reckon I can undercut charlotte..)

i was actually going to offer a beautifully crafted, exquisitely worded, typed with my own fair hands, tenancy agreement FOC. but seeing as you have an offer of a doubtless rank bit of paper, that's covered in beer stains and bits of kebab and has resided in the arse crack of stinking new zealander, i'd advise you go for that one. it would definitely put off prospective female tenants. problem sorted.

Unfortunately i seem to be free most bloody weekends these days, most excitement i get is the gym and the golf club, how exciting is that eh ?
